I was born in Leeds and spent my childhood there, before going on to study medicine at Cambridge. In the late 1970's, I moved to the South West, where for many years, my time was fully occupied with family and work commitments. It was not until 1993 that I took up watercolours and was soon exhibiting successfully.
I enjoy the close observation required in trying to capture the textures and colours of pottery, fruit, flowers, shells and other natural objects and representing the way light plays on surfaces, particularly white surfaces, is always a challenge.
I use a limited palette and, whatever the subject, I try to maintain a clean and fresh look on the paper, with an emphasis on lightness and tonal range.
